Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship

Bringing your parents or grandparents to Canada is a powerful step toward strengthening family bonds. Through the Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship Program (PGP), Canadian citizens and permanent residents can sponsor their parents and grandparents to become permanent residents and live with them long-term in Canada. At Saga Immigration, we offer end-to-end support through this emotionally and procedurally significant application process.

Sponsor Eligibility

To sponsor a parent or grandparent, you must:

  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident

  • Be at least 18 years old

  • Live in Canada at the time of application

  • Meet the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) requirement for the past three consecutive tax years, proven through your Notice of Assessment from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA)

  • Commit to a 20-year financial undertaking to support the sponsored person, ensuring they will not require social assistance

  • Not be in default of any previous sponsorship or immigration-related obligation

Sponsors can include a spouse or common-law partner’s income if they are co-signing the sponsorship.

Sponsored Person Eligibility

Eligible individuals include:

  • Parents or grandparents of the sponsor or of the sponsor’s spouse/common-law partner

  • May be biological or adoptive parents/grandparents

  • Must undergo and pass medical, security, and criminal background checks

Dependent children of parents/grandparents (i.e., the sponsor’s siblings) cannot be included in the PGP application unless they meet the definition of a dependent child.

Program Overview and Quota

Program Overview and Quota

The PGP operates through a lottery-based system, where interested sponsors must first submit an Interest to Sponsor form during the intake period set by IRCC. Those selected through the random draw are then invited to submit a full sponsorship application.

Due to high demand and limited spots, planning ahead and ensuring all documentation is prepared in advance is essential for timely submission after receiving an invitation.
