Dependent Child Sponsorship
Who Can Sponsor and Who is Eligible?
Sponsor Eligibility
You may sponsor a dependent child if you:
Are a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or a registered Indian under the Canadian Indian Act
Are 18 years of age or older
Reside in Canada or plan to return to Canada (in case of citizens living abroad)
Are not under a removal order, incarcerated, or in default of a previous sponsorship undertaking
Financial proof is not typically required for dependent child sponsorships unless the child has their own child (grandchild of sponsor)
Eligible Children
To be considered a dependent child, the sponsored individual must:
Be under 22 years of age, and
Be unmarried and not in a common-law relationship
Children over the age of 22 may still qualify as dependents if they:
Have been financially dependent on their parents since before turning 22, and
Are unable to support themselves financially due to a physical or mental condition
You may sponsor:
Your biological child
Your adopted child
Your stepchild (child of your spouse or common-law partner)
An orphaned sibling, niece, nephew, or grandchild, under specific humanitarian or compassionate grounds
Inland vs. Outland Sponsorship
Inland Sponsorship: For couples living together in Canada. The sponsored person may be eligible for an Open Work Permit while the application is processed.
Outland Sponsorship: For couples where the sponsored person is living outside Canada. Processed via the visa office responsible for their country of residence.
Saga Immigration assists with both streams and helps you choose the best path based on your situation.
